“Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy is one of the best books I have read for many reasons.

One of the things I like the most about this book is its opening line.

It says:

“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

This beautiful literary sentence talks about something important we all love, cherish, care about, and try to achieve, live, and give.

And that is: happiness in our families.

We all want to live in happy families and to create happy families later on in life.

But what makes a family a happy one?

What is the standard?

And what are the things we must achieve in order to have happy families?

Let us discuss some of things related to this topic.

What is a happy family?

A happy family is a family where all members feel loved, appreciated, trusted, taken care of, cherished, adored, and supported.

It is a family where any member of it knows that at any time, no matter what happens, they have the backing and support of the other members.

Whether they have troubles at work, health, love life, or social life, they should feel that they have a safe place at home.

What can we do to have a happy family?

There are no magic formulas but of course, there are things we can do to at least try to achieve that.

  • Trust

Trust is crucial for family members to feel safe.

Without trust, on cannot feel loved or happy.

  • Encouragement

Encouraging one another is one of the most important traits of a happy family.

Every one of us is susceptible to failure, problems, and hardships. Without encouragement from our family, we may feel we may never get over our hardships.

At the end of the day, we remember those who stood by us in our darkest times- most often than not- they are our family.

  • Honesty

No entity, let alone a family, can function healthily without honesty.

It is what builds prospering, trustworthy, and loving families.

Part of being honest is to tell your loved ones when they are in the wrong.

That does not mean not letting them make their own mistakes, after all, we all learn from our mistakes.

It rather means confronting them in a gentle way when we think they need it.

It is not an easy thing to do but they will thank you for it.

What is surprisingly normal in a happy family?

We may think that happy families are perfect, magical, and pristine.

This could not be farthest from the truth.

Members of all families, even happy ones, or especially happy ones, fight and argue too.

They sometimes get upset or angry at each other.

Sometimes they may even spend a lengthy period of time not talking to each other.

This is perfectly normal; after all, we are merely humans.

Actually, people who fight are people who care about each other. We should be worried when loved ones stop arguing with us because most of the time, it means that they do not care anymore.

In conclusion, family is where our life starts.

It is where our personalities are shaped and formed.

If we are happy at home, we are likely to be happy outside of home.

After all, home is where the heart is, and we always carry our families in our hearts.
